Travel Tips and Safety Tips for Women

Women’s Safety Tips for Car Rentals  - Airplanes & Airports

  • use covered luggage tags and put your office address on the tag or a relative’s address
  • be careful regarding your valuables on overnight flights or when you use the bathroom
  • stay close to your valuables when entering airport security poles
  • talk to women and female flight attendants on the plane about the area you are visiting
  • use the toilet next to the wall and put items in the corner
  • use public transportation to a city center rather than an unmarked taxi
  • don’t stop if someone tries to get your attention or if your car is bumped – get to a lighted and busy area
  • be aware of rental car problems like flat tires within the first 24 hours – these cars are checked before leaving the lot – so this could mean sabotage
  • rent a phone or bring your own
  • bring a compass so you know your driving directions
  • keep all items away from view in your car – including maps and guidebooks

 Women’s Safety Tips for Rooms

  • lodge a rubber door stop under hotel door for extra security – there are also alarm devices you can purchase for your hotel room door
  • never open your hotel room door – if they say they are staff then phone and verify who they are and why they are there
  • always have your bags taken to the room and have porter check the room before you enter when possible – if not possible then check it yourself before you relax
  • make sure the phone in your hotel room is working properly
  • use the ‘Do not Disturb’ sign if you wish people to think your room is occupied
  • do not use the sign for calling for Maid Cleaning – call housekeeping if necessary
  • put expensive clothing on hangars under other clothing
  • lock up all valuables in the safe and larger items in your suitcase (e.g. laptops)
  • ask the concierge to book your restaurants and advising ‘please take care of this woman, she is coming alone and will need a taxi home’.

 Women’s Street Smarts

  • study a map ahead of time
  • dress down and try not to look like a tourist – nothing new & flashy – no label designer clothing
  • no jewelry – nothing – even fake jewelry  - except a modest wedding ring
  • wear a money belt – looped into your belt loops
  • carry one credit card and photocopies of important documents with you
  • keep valuables away from the street side
  • use zip lock bags to divide money for small purchases and for larger ones
  • become familiar with foreign currency before  you have to use it
  • do not talk to people on the street if they ask for directions, change etc. (if you are a tourist why are they asking you)
  • if  you must ask for directions then imply you are meeting your husband at that destination
  • remove ID tags if you have been at a meeting
  • bring a flashlight

 Women’s Packing Tips

  • for makeup - you can use a cheap pencil case with a clear plastic front so you can then see what is inside and it can pack flat
  • carry a black permanent marker for touch ups to black shoes
  • choosing a wardrobe of basics will help you deal with space limitations - select clothes that will coordinate around one or two colors.
  • for international travel, it is advisable to take along an electrical adapter kit for your hair dryer, shaver or travel iron - most European countries run on 220 volts rather than 110
  • natural materials acquire and retain creases much more readily than synthetic ones
  • the way in which the clothing is folded for packing is important - creases come from applied pressure to hard folds - so your goal is to reduce the number of hard folds
  • the common practice of individually folding items and piling them atop one another is the worst thing you can do
  • roll clothing rather than folding it - reduce the number of hard folds
  • bundle wrapping technique - involves the careful wrapping of clothes around a central core object - avoiding hard folds that result in creases
  • central core object could be an organizer pouch filled with soft items (socks, swimsuit, undergarments, etc.) to form a sort of cushion around which the clothing will be wrapped
  • clothing is wrapped in a specific order - so that the larger and more tailored garments will end up on the outside of the bundle, with less easily wrinkled pieces closer to the core
  • try this system - start with your jacket, followed by skirts, dresses; then long-sleeved shirts; then short-sleeved shirts; then slacks; then sweaters, knits; then shorts
