When applicable it is often cheapest to purchase your air and land arrangements as a package through a vacation wholesaler rather than purchase the air and land independently. The reason for this is the wholesalers get discount pricing from the airlines and the hotels and pass those savings on to you. So-called "independent" tours (not escorted) often also include "meet and greet" and transfers to your hotel in each destination city. If your package includes "meet and greet" service, you will be met at the airport at your destination. At that point they will give you a quick orientation, possibly provide you with maps and other materials, and either escort you to your hotel or to your transportation. In other cases transfers are not included so it is up to you to arrange for the transportation. Although this doesn't sound like a big difference, especially after a long international flight, you are usually very tired and it is nice to be met by a knowledgeable person and not have to find a taxi or public transportation and worry about how much it should cost, how to pay, whether it is reliable and will actually take you to your hotel, etc.
